Cheng Yan was an important representative figure of ash-yellow painting on porcelain in China during the late Qing Dynasty until the Republican era. As the son of Cheng Men, the founder of the ash-yellow technique, he not only adopted the family's craftsmanship but also dared to undertake bold artistic innovations that had a profound influence on the development of Chinese porcelain painting.
