Rare, Large Pink Sandstone Head of Vishnu from the Chandella Period - Rare, large pink sandstone head of Vishnu from the Chandella period India, probably 10th-12th century or later. Sandstone, mounted on a wooden base. Dimensions without base: approx. 30 × 14 × 19.5 cm. Base: approx. 19.5 x 19.5 x 10 cm. Condition: Consistent with age, with clear signs of wear. Significant abrasion, notches, material losses, and signs of weathering and erosion. - Provenance: From a German private collection. The head features large eyes and heavy lids, crowned by a Kiritamukuta. Vishnu is one of the central gods in Hinduism and is considered the preserver of the universe. Already mentioned in the Vedas, he was originally associated with the sun, light, and cosmic order. His tasks include preserving the world and protecting cosmic balance, as well as fighting evil and protecting humans and gods. The Chandella period (approx. 10th-11th century) is particularly known for its sandstone figures, which are among the finest examples of Central Indian temple art. The dynasty ruled in Central India (especially Madhya Pradesh) and created numerous sculptures that appear today in museums and auctions worldwide.
