Small Lángyáo-hóng brush washer (Bixi) - Small Lángyáo-hóng brush washer (Bixi) China, Qing Dynasty, probably 18th/19th century. Ceramic, glazed inside and out with copper-red glaze (oxblood red); the base with celadon glaze and beautiful crackle pattern. H. 5.5 cm, D. of mouth 8.7 cm. Well preserved, no chips or cracks. Slightly soiled, signs of use. The term Lángyáo hóng / Niúxie hóng (oxblood) refers to a deep red, glossy glaze fired with copper oxide in a reducing atmosphere. This technique creates the characteristic, rich, and nuanced red with fine bubbles or streaks. The glaze was perfected in the imperial Jingdezhen kilns under the supervision of Lang Tingji (1705-1712) during the Kangxi reign.
