Two Sandstone Heads of Vishnu and Khmer - Two Sandstone Heads of Vishnu and Khmer India, probably 18th/19th century or earlier. Sandstone, mounted on wooden bases. Dimensions without base: approx. 20.5 x 13.5 x 11 cm and 17 x 9.5 x 7.5 cm. Base dimensions: approx. 9.4 x 9.4 x 8.7 cm and 12.5 x 9.5 x 5 cm. Condition: Strong wear, nicks, material losses, and signs of weathering and erosion. Vishnu is one of the central gods in Hinduism and is considered the preserver of the universe. Already mentioned in the Vedas, he was originally associated with the sun, light, and cosmic order. His tasks include preserving the world, protecting cosmic balance, fighting evil, and protecting humans and gods. A Buddha head from the Khmer culture - mostly from the Angkor period of the 12th-13th centuries - shows the typical combination of spiritual symbolism and masterful stone carving. The sculptures were made from fine-grained sandstone, a material abundant in Cambodia and ideally suited for the precise, soft forms of Buddhist effigies.
