Old Temple Wood Relief - Old temple wood relief South India, probably 19th century. Wood; metal ring for hanging. Dimensions: approx. 77 × 31 × 3 cm. Relief with divine figures, carved on both sides. Probably an Indian processional shield (Kavadi). Condition: Signs of age and use. A splash ornament is broken off. ”One foot has been subsequently restored. The Kavadi is a ritual carrying frame from South India, which devotees carry during processions - especially during the Thaipusam festival - in honor of the god Murugan. It symbolizes devotion, sacrifice, and spiritual purification and is often carried after a period of fasting and meditation.
