Migita Toshihide (1863-1925) was a versatile woodcut artist of the Meiji period, known for Bijin-ga, war depictions, and book illustrations. As a student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, he combined a finely elaborated drawing technique with a modern sensibility. His print Bijin jûnisô (”Twelve Aspects of Beautiful Women”) belongs to a series depicting elegant women associated with the months of the year. These color woodcuts typically portray seasonal motifs – such as fireflies or shuttlecocks – along with graceful female figures, reflecting both poetic traditions and the aesthetics of the Meiji period.
