Color woodcut on Washi (Japanese paper). Dimensions: 25 × 35 cm. The sheet is loose. Title: Sugawara no Michizane-ko. Signed lower right. Publisher. Condition: Very well preserved. Traces of age; slightly creased traces lower right. - Another piece is located in the Waseda University Theatre Museum. Sugawara no Michizane (1847), Series: 100 Poems by 100 Poets (a joint series with Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi). Context: He appears in a kabuki-related scene depicting Kan Shojo (the deified form of Michizane). Actor: Bando Hikosaburo III. Play: Shojo Nagori from Sugawara denju tenarai kagami. Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865), also Toyokuni III, was a student of Utagawa Toyokuni. He is the most prolific artist in Japanese art, creating more than 40,000 works, including prints, books, and paintings. He devoted himself to all genres, but particularly excelled in his prints for Kabuki theater, in which he revealed extraordinary inventiveness.
