Bargheer studied until 1918 at the Hamburg-Lerchenfeld School of Applied Arts and became a member of the Hamburg Secession in 1929. In 1939, Bargheer moved to Italy and stylistically turned to abstraction. In 1955 and 1959, he participated in the 1st and 2nd Documenta. In 1963, he became a professor at the University of Arts in Berlin.
