After his training as a glass painter, Bonato studied mural painting at the Cologne Werkkunstschulen from 1956 - 1961. He lived in the USA for several years and was a co-founder of the Cologne artist group ”K-66” in 1966. Bonato's works often have a socio-critical background. In 1987, he received a teaching position in the Department of Art and Design at the Bergische Universität-Gesamthochschule Wuppertal. In 1993, he was awarded the August Macke Prize in Bonn.
