Ebert came to painting only at the age of 37, after having worked as a casual laborer. In 1946, he studied painting and drawing at the Burg Giebichenstein University, but it was not until 1956 that Ebert was able to work as a freelance artist. In 1973, he received the Art Prize of the City of Halle.
