Africa Chair for the Africa Hall at Expo 2000 in Hanover, Bär⩷, Bad Wimpfen/Berlin, 1999/2000 - Africa Chair for the Africa Hall at Expo 2000 in Hanover Bär⩷, Bad Wimpfen/Berlin, 1999/2000. Used plastic packaging and plastic bags. H. 87 cm, W. 48 cm, D. 58 cm. The chairs for the Africa Hall were created as part of the ”One World Initiative” launched by German development aid and with the support of the German society for plastic recycling. For the realization of the design, whose slightly elevated backrest is inspired by traditional, carved wooden African seating furniture, plastic waste from Germany and 39 African countries was used. The top layer of the 400 chairs always consists of African plastic bags or packaging. They make each individual piece of this series unique. The artist and designer group Bär⩷ was founded in 1992; consisting of: Beata Bär, Gerhard Bär and Hartmut Knell. They deal with the design and manufacture of objects from used, domestic plastic packaging (from crisp bags to fabric softener bottles). Each object remains unique, even in series production, due to differences in color, detailed form, and structure. The recycled objects are always a document of a certain time and a reflection of the colorful consumer world. Pre-inspection possible at the August Kestner Museum.
