Chandeliers differ from ordinary ceiling lamps in their dimensions and, above all, in their elaborate, mostly magnificent design. Their classic form emerged in the Baroque period. Since then, they have been considered a symbol of power, wealth, and splendor. A fallen chandelier, however, is read as a metaphor for decline and decay.
