Friedlaender studied from 1928 to 1930 at the State Academy for Art and Applied Arts in Wroclaw, among others with Otto Mueller. In 1937, he emigrated to France, where he was interned between 1939 and 1943. Friedlaender is considered a pioneer of modern etching. He participated in numerous international exhibitions and represented France at the Venice Biennale in 1958. During his lifetime, a retrospective took place at the Kunsthalle Bremen in 1987.
