After training as a typesetter in Augsburg between 1955 and 1958, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Franz Nagel from 1958 to 1962 and completed his studies in 1970 with a diploma from the Academy. He undertook numerous study trips in Europe, staying in Sri Lanka from 1962 to 1964. Gronen married Marlini Wickrama Sinha in 1961 and undertook trips to New York and Chicago from 1976-1978. He lives and works in Cologne.
