19th C French Portrait of a Woman Dated 1844, Mixed Media, Jean Maurin - Attributed to Jean Maurin (French, 1798-1860) Graphite and white chalk on toned paper. Signed: “J. Maurin” and inscribed “C. Jacobi” (or similar) at lower center and the date “44” for 1844. Unframed, measures 39.5 x 27.5 cm, 15.5 inches H x 18.5 W. A 19th-century portrait drawing depicting a noblewoman in profile, adorned with pearl jewels including a headband, earrings, and a fur-trimmed garment clasped with ornate fasteners. Executed in graphite with delicate white heightening on warm-toned paper, the work demonstrates the crisp draftsmanship and elegant modelling associated with the Parisian lithographer and portraitist Jean Maurin. Possible sitter: Countess Caroline von Jacobi - A Prussian/Baltic-German noblewoman name that appears in some 1830s–1850s salon guest lists and court registers.
