Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) Japanese Woodblock Print, Snow on the Sumida River - Snow on the Sumida River is a celebrated woodblock print by the legendary Japanese ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Hiroshige. While Hiroshige depicted this river many times, the most famous version of this specific theme comes from his series Famous Places in Edo in the Four Seasons (ca. 1834-1835).  This vertical print (o-tanzaku format) captures a serene, dreamlike winter scene where the river and sky blend together under a heavy snowfall.  Subject: A lone boatman, clad in a traditional straw hat and raincoat, poles a raft through the indigo-blue waters of the Sumida River.
