Paul Signac was a pioneering French Neo-Impressionist painter and theorist who, alongside Georges Seurat, developed the revolutionary Pointillist (or Divisionist) technique. Later in his career, he moved away from the strict, laborious dots of oil painting toward free-flowing, luminous watercolours, which allowed him greater spontaneity during his travels.  An ardent sailor, his passion for the sea significantly influenced his subject matter; he spent much of his time sailing the European coast and painting its ports and rivers.
