Rare Late Kamakura Period Mumei Tachi Katana Attr. Shikkake School (Yamato Tradition) with NBTHK Papers - This exceptional Tachi Katana, dating to the late Kamakura period (1185-1333), is a historically significant piece from the oldest sword school in Japan, the Yamato tradition, which forged blades for the renowned warrior monks of Buddhist shrines in the Nara region. Key Features: School: Attributed to the Shikkake school, one of the five major Yamato schools and directly associated with the Todai-ji temple. The founder was Shikkake Norinaga. Attribution and Ranking: Oosuriage mumei (unsigned, cut shortened) blade. Attributed as Sikkake and holds a Jyoujyo saku ranking. Craftsmanship: Jitetsu: Extremely fine and elegant, showing a mix of itame hada and mokume hada with masanagare, jinie, and chikei work, suggesting a quality closer to the Taima School. Hamon: Niedeki suguha and notare with a deep nioikuchi. Features include double hamon, uchinoke, and internal activity such as sunagashi and kinsuji work. The boshi is hakikake style. The quality of the jigane and hamon meets the standard of a Jyuyo token. Documentation and Condition: Accompanied by NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon paper and has been polished by a high-ranking polisher. Currently housed in a Shirasaya with a Kae saya.
