Esther Scroll – Turkey / Balkans Region, 19th Century – Rolled on Wooden Handle - Esther scroll. [Turkey or Balkans region?, ca. 19th century]. Ink on parchment. Esther scroll in Sephardic Stam script, with serifs (Tagim). 20 columns (over 4 membranes), 18 lines per column. Rolled on a turned and carved wooden handle, with a Turkish crescent at top of handle (graphically similar to bone and silver handles produced in Turkey). Height of parchment: approx. 12.5 cm. Maximum height, including wooden handle: approx. 34 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains and wear. Blue ink scribbles. At beginning of first membrane: remains of parchment string for fastening (torn and incomplete). Open cracks at top of wooden handle.
