Item Overview
Description:
Hand-Colored Map of Jerusalem – Joseph Moxon – Published by Nicolas Visscher, Amsterdam, 1671
Jerusalem – Hand-colored engraved map by Joseph Moxon. Amsterdam: Nicolas Visscher, 1671. Legend in English.
Bird’s-eye view of Jerusalem during the Second Temple period, with the Temple prominently depicted at center and Herod’s palace to the north. In the lower right corner, the anointing of Solomon as king is illustrated.
From a series of six biblical maps created by Nicolas Visscher ca. 1643, based on the map by Johann and Heinrich Stern (Leipzig, 1630).
This English version was translated and engraved by British cartographer and printer Joseph Moxon, and issued with an explanatory booklet (Sacred Geographie or Scriptural Mapps, London, 1671).
At left, within a cartouche, appears a dedication to John Pearson (1613-1686), Lord Bishop of Chester.
Engraved map: 35.5X48.5 cm (verso blank). Good condition. Minor blemishes. Repaired tears filled with paper. Mounted.
Laor 1084 (cf. Laor 1155; Laor 1137).
