Item Overview
Description:
Hand-Colored Map of Jerusalem – After Juan Bautista Villalpando – London, 1689
Ierusalem – Engraved map by Richard Blome. London, 1689.
Imaginary map of Jerusalem, based on the 1604 reconstruction by Jesuit scholar Juan Bautista Villalpando. The Temple Mount is depicted raised on massive substructures, alongside the royal palace ("Davids Citty"), city streets, walls, and other buildings.
Surrounding the central map, within a broad decorative border, are additional vignettes: a Renaissance-style façade of the Temple rendered as a European palace, Temple implements (menorah, altars, table), the High Priest, King Solomon in Eastern attire, and more.
A dedication from Richard Blome to John LLynwell of Brecknock appears inside a coat of arms at the lower margin.
Engraved by John Kip (signed: J. Kip Sculp. Londini 1689).
Engraved map: 55X43 cm (printed on two joined sheets; verso blank). Fair-good condition. Stains. Tears and creases to margins; large central tear repaired. Mounted.
Laor 958.
