Item Overview
Description:
Large Collection of Jerusalem Photographs – Francis Frith – Second Half of the 19th Century
Large collection comprising over thirty-five photographs presenting landscapes and sites from all parts of Jerusalem. [19th century].
This collection of photographs offers landscapes and sites from all parts of Jerusalem. These photos appeared in various albums by Frith (some are accompanied by the original text pages with which they were bound).
Francis Frith (1822-1898), English photographer and traveler, among the most prominent of the Holy Land’s earliest photographers. Embarked on a journey to Alexandria in 1856, and then spent four years conducting photographic expeditions throughout the Near East. Owing to local conditions, Frith was forced to transport his photographic equipment from place to place on the backs of donkeys, and develop his negatives immediately after taking the photos in makeshift tents that served as his darkrooms. His works are widely regarded as the first professional photographs documenting the Holy Land.
Over 35 photographs, mounted onto cardboard plates originally bound in book form, some in duplicate copies of two or more. Average size: 23X15 cm. Overall good condition. Stains and wear, mostly to cardboard plates.
