Letter by Rabbi Meir Berlin of Mogilev - To his Brother Rabbi Ya'akov Berlin, Father of the Netziv - More Letters by Family Members - Mogilev, 1864
Letter sent from Mogilev to Jerusalem, to R. Ya'akov Berlin [of Mir, father of the Netziv]. One leaf contains letters by six of his family members who lived in the city: his brother R. Meir Berlin, Rabbi of the city, his brother R. Zvi Hirsh Berlin, his son R. Eliezer Lipman Berlin [son-in-law of his uncle R. Zvi Hirsh of Mogilev], his grandson R. Zvi Hirsh, R. Moshe Berlin and R. Yosef Meir [son-in-law of his brother R. Meir]. Mogilev, 14th of Sivan 1864.
Letter handwritten and signed by his son R. E[liezer] Lipman Berlin in which he denies a rumor from Jerusalem "that my brother was declined the position of Rabbi in Syalyets… I presume that this is a false rumor because my brother R. A.M. and his son live near the city of Syalyets and I received several letters from them and if this was true, they would not conceal from me…" [that year, R. Netanel Berlin the Netziv's brother received an appointment to the Syalyets rabbinate. The aforementioned R. A.M. is R. Avraham Meir Berlin of Bykhaw, son-in-law of R. Zvi Hirsh Luria, brother of the Radal].
Further in the leaf is a long letter handwritten and signed by R. "Meir Berlin" Rabbi of the city of Mogilev with a halachic discussion about a get (divorce bill) sent from a man in Mogilev to his wife who resides in Jerusalem. Following the signature are another few lines written to someone else with another signature of "Meir Berlin".
More letters appear on the rest of the leaf: an interesting letter by R. "Zvi Hirsh ---", who writes to his father-in-law and another handwritten letter signed by the same brother R. "Zvi Hirsh Berlin" who adds regards to a friend in Jerusalem after his signature and signs again "Zvi Hirsh Berlin". A handwritten line signed by R. "Moshe Berlin" was added between the lines [apparently, a nephew of R. Ya'akov]. On the last page is a long letter (slightly blurred) handwritten and signed by R. "Yosef Meir S---".
Rabbi Meir Berlin (ca. 1796-1869), brother of R. Ya'akov Berlin of Mir, father of the Netziv of Volozhin. A prominent leader of his generation, his approbations appear in many books. Served a 40-year tenure as Rabbi of Mogilev which was a large district in White Russia. After his death, his son R. Chaim Berlin succeeded him in the Mogilev rabbinate.
R. Zvi Hirsh Berlin, a notable of the Mogilev community, brother of the city rabbi and father-in-law of R. Lipman Berlin who was the son of his brother R. Ya'akov of Mir (an interesting account of the geneology of the Berlin family of Mogilev appears in the letter by their relative R. Chaim Berlin Rabbi of Moscow son of the Netziv in his approbation to the book Toldot Anshei Shem, Warsaw 1875).
