Esther Scroll in Filigree Gilt Silver Case, Adorned with a Coral Stone – Ottoman Empire, 19th Century - Esther scroll housed in a decorated case. [Ottoman Empire, 19th century]. Ink on parchment; silver, filigree and granulation (unmarked); gilt; coral. Esther scroll, written on 4 sheets of parchment sewn together, 25 columns of text, 14 lines per column. ”Tagim” over designated letters. Scroll housed in a magnificent gilt silver-thread (filigree) case, decorated with tiny gilt silver spherules (granulation) in vegetal patterns. At the top of the case is a tapering dome-shaped ornament surmounted by a red coral bead (characteristic of Esther scroll cases from lands of the Ottoman Empire, particularly Iraq and Turkey). At the bottom of the case is a crank-like shaft-handle. Height of parchment sheets: 6.5 cm. Overall good condition. Creases and stains to margins. Height of case (incl. handle): 23 cm. Good condition. Minor warping and fractures. Small pieces missing.
