Tzenah URenah, Five Books of the Torah in Yiddish – Yiddish commentary selected from Midrashim on the Five Books of the Torah, haftarot and Five Megillot, by the preacher R. Yaakov son of Yitzchak Ashkenazi of Yanov. Amsterdam: Chaim Drucker, 1711. Yiddish.

Torah verses in square script, with vocalization. Rest of text in the familiar Tzenah URenah font.

Early handwritten signatures and inscriptions of a Jewish family in Amsterdam. Signature on leaf 149: "Moshe son of Leizer Levi Schleser". A notable inscription on the front endpaper details a miraculous salvation on a ship in the year 1740 (in Hebrew and Yiddish). This is followed by an inscription on the death of his father in 1734, followed by his signature: "Moshe son of Leizer Levi Schleser".

The leaf continues with inscriptions by his son R. Hirsch Schleser on the passing of his father and mother. On verso of last leaf, inscriptions of births and deaths in Amsterdam in 1730-1747.

On back endpaper, several more inscriptions, including a firsthand account (in Hebrew and Yiddish) of the passing of R. Aryeh Leib Amsterdam (son-in-law of the Chacham Tzvi) on the seventh day of Pesach 1755, when he was brought by ship to the Ashkenazic cemetery of Muiderberg near Amsterdam and buried on the morning of the last day of Pesach.

[1], 192 leaves. Lacking leaf [2] with approbations of rabbis of Amsterdam and Rotterdam and proofreader's preface. Leaf 67 bound before leaf 66. 32.5 cm. Fair condition. Stains, including dark stains and dampstains. Creases and wear. Marginal tears and open tears to title page and other leaves, affecting text in some places, repaired with paper and tape. New leather binding.
