Rinat Dodim – By Rabbi Eliyahu Baal Shem – Basel, 1600 – First Edition - Rinat Dodim, commentary to Song of Songs, by R. Eliyahu son of R. Moshe Loans. Basel: Konrad Waldkirch, [1600]. First edition, printed in the author's lifetime. R. Eliyahu Baal Shem Loans (1565-1636), studied in the yeshiva of the Maharal of Prague, dealt in kabbalah and writing amulets. He came to Basel after leaving his community in Frankfurt am Main, and printed this book ”since teachings written in a book are as if they were preached to many thousands” (as stated on the title page). Illustrations of faces appear on p. 18b within the commentary to the verse ”Libavtini”. Ownership inscription on title page: ”So as 'not to place a stumbling block before the blind', I sign my name, Alexander Sender Elzus” – R. Alexander Sender Elzus, rabbi in Freudental, wrote an approbation to Mafteach HaYam; his halachic correspondence with R. Yedidiah Tiah Weil (son of the Korban Netanel) is preserved in JTS Ms. 10073. On verso of last leaf, many birth inscriptions from 1714 onwards, and conclusion dated 28th Elul 1749, signed by ”Sender W…[?]”. [1], 30 leaves. 18.5 cm. Fair condition. Stains, including dampstains. Light wear. Worming, affecting text. Tears, including open tears to last leaf, repaired with tape. Close trimming, bordering title frame, slightly affecting catchwords in several places.
