Or Torah (by Rabbi Menachem di Lonzano) – Amsterdam, 1659 – Signatures of Rabbi Yaakov Shamash, Teacher of the Chatam Sofer, and Glosses – Original Leather Binding - Or Torah, first part of Shtei Yadot, on proofreading of the Torah and clarification of the Masoretic text, by R. Menachem di Lonzano. Amsterdam: Uri son of Aharon HaLevi, 1659. This work was first published as part of Shtei Yadot, Venice 1618, here printed as a standalone work for the first time. Distinguished copy, with signatures of R. Yaakov Shamash: ”Yaakov Shamash, Purim 1753, this came [correction in another hand: ”was brought”] here from Amsterdam”. Another signature at center of title page: ”Yaakov Shamash”. Handwritten marginal glosses and corrections [possibly handwritten by R. Yaakov Shamash]. R. Yaakov Shamash (d. 1785), a leading Torah scholar of Frankfurt am Main before the Haflaah began to officiate as Rabbi; served as Rabbi and head of the Beit Din of the Frankfurt Kloiz and great Beit Midrash (the fourth signatory on the letter of Frankfurt rabbis on the ”Cleves Get”). He was one of the teachers of the young Chatam Sofer, who refers to him as such in his writings. Original leather binding, with gilt decorations. 27 leaves. 18.5 cm. Good-fair condition.
