Collection of Books – Handwritten Glosses, Including Glosses of Rabbi Aryeh Leib Rashkes and Rabbi Avraham Aharon Yudelovitz - Assorted collection of eight books with handwritten glosses – Chassidut and ethics, responsa and novellae on the Talmud and Shulchan Aruch: • Zichron Yosef, responsa and sermons by R. Yosef Steinhardt Rabbi of Fürth. Fürth, [1773]. First edition. In the author's introduction, he criticizes the nascent Chassidic movement and the devotion to rebbes. Lengthy learned marginal glosses to some responsa (slightly trimmed) – handwritten by R. Avraham Aharon Yudelovitz, some signed at beginning – R. Avraham Aharon Yudelovitz (ca. 1850-1930), Lithuanian scholar and leading American rabbi. Nephew and disciple of R. Meir Meirim Shafit, Rabbi of Kobryn. Served as Rabbi in Lithuania and England, and in 1904 reached the United States, where he was appointed Chief Rabbi of the United Congregations of New York. • Responsa Chatam Sofer, Orach Chaim. Pressburg, 1855. First edition. Ownership inscriptions on endpaper: ”This book [be]longs to… R. Aryeh Leib son of R. Shmuel Mordechai Raskes, preacher and posek here in Šnipiškės, near the capital city of Vilna”; ”Belongs to R. Aryeh Rashkes, Rabbi of Šnipiškės near Vilna”. Stamps: ”The new Beit Midrash of Cape Town”. Lengthy learned glosses on leaf 19 and p. 37b, handwritten by R. Aryeh Leib Rashkes – R. Aryeh Leib Rashkes (1838-1914), a prominent Torah scholar, a leading rabbi of Vilna and Jerusalem. Served as Rabbi of Šnipiškės, a suburb of Vilna. Author of Even Leshem BaDevir, a commentary on the Raavan. • Mishnat Avraham, on the laws of Torah, tefillin and mezuzah scribing, by R. Avraham Yaffe. Zhitomir, 1868. First edition, published by sons of the author. Two stereotyped leaves bound at beginning of book, with index. Stamps. Many handwritten glosses. On endpaper, many handwritten inscriptions, including ownership inscriptions stating that the book belongs to ”R. Uri Rabbi of…”, signed by his son, R. ”Yaakov Yitzchak Landman, son of the above great Gaon” – Rebbe Uri Landman of Strelisk (1836-1917), grandson of the elder R. Uri of Strelisk.
