Modaah – Jerusalem, Ca. 1869 – Printed Letter, Signed by Rabbis of Jerusalem and Kollel Officials of Eretz Israel - Modaah – printed letter addressed to ”our faithful brethren of the house of Israel in the city ______”, from the directors of the kollels of Volhynia and Chabad in the four holy cities of Jerusalem, Hebron, Safed and Tiberias, signed by seven kollel officials and rabbis of Jerusalem. [Jerusalem, ca. 1869]. Appeal to Jewish communities in Russia and Poland for donations to the R. Meir Baal HaNes fund, by way of the tzedakah collectors in St. Petersburg or Moscow. Signed: R. ”Avraham Eisenstein of Drohiczyn”, R. Yaakov Yehudah Löwy”, R. ”Ze'ev HaKohen of Pinsk – from all the Chassidic kollels residing in the four holy cities…”, R. Eliezer Tzvi Kav VeNaki of Grodno”, R. ”Meir son of R. Asher of Anykščiai”, R. ”Eizik Wender” [R. Eizik Yaffe of Druya?], and R. ”Yisrael son of R. Tzvi Hirsh Shapiro of Kollel Chabad”. R. Avraham Eisenstein (1800-1886), born in Drohiczyn, Grodno, Russia (present-day Poland). He joined the immigration wave of the disciples of the Vilna Gaon, along with his father-in-law R. Chaim Kohen of Pinsk. In Safed he was appointed to the Beit Din of the Perushim community, and officiated in the Beit Din of R. Yisrael of Shklow. He lost his wife and children in the earthquake of 1837, and in 1839 he traveled abroad to collect funds, and was received affectionately by the Chatam Sofer and his son the Ketav Sofer. At the same time he was engaged to marry the daughter of the Chatam Sofer, but the bride passed away before the wedding. Upon his return to Eretz Israel he married the daughter of the official R. Aryeh Ne'eman and immigrated to Jerusalem, where he was appointed dayan of the Beit Din and headed the Vaad HaKlali. Alongside his other duties, he also edited books of Rishonim from manuscript. His son R. Eliyahu Mordechai Eisenstein was a confidant of R. Shmuel Salant and a head of the Vaad HaKlali. R. Yaakov Yehudah Löwy, head of the Jerusalem Beit Din (1813-1889), was a master of the revealed and hidden realms of the Torah, a holy man and kabbalist. He was a rabbi in Ślesin. He immigrated to Jerusalem along with his two brothers, R. Asher Lemel Rabbi of Galiny and R. Nachum Rabbi of Szadek, when all three had the same dream one night, instructing them to immigrate to Eretz Israel. Served as head of the Jerusalem Beit Din for over forty years. R. Ze'ev HaKohen of Pinsk, official of the Volhynia Kollel, was a follower of Karlin and an intimate associate of the Beit Aharon. Son of the Chassid R. Elazar Chaim HaKohen of Pinsk. Immigrated to Jerusalem in 1862, establishing the Karlin synagogue in Jerusalem. Passed away 8th Adar II 1875. R. Eliezer Tzvi son of R. Mordechai Kav VeNaki of Grodno. His signature appears among the officials of Jerusalem in 1866. Died 15th Iyar 1875. R. Meir son of R. Asher Kamaikin of Aniksht (Anykščiai), official of Kollel Vilna and Samogitia. Son-in-law of R. Moshe Meshel Luria Rabbi of Krakinova. He immigrated to Jerusalem in 1862, and passed away in Sivan 1885. [1] leaf. 24.5 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains. Wear and creases. Tears and trimmed margins.
