Collection of Letters and Documents from Archive of Rabbi Avraham Tzvi Schorr, Head of the Beit Din Chassidim in Jerusalem – 1920s-1940s - Large collection of letters and documents from the archive of R. Avraham Tzvi Schorr, head of the Beit Din Chassidim and president of the Ashkenazi community in Jerusalem (son of author of Minchat Shai), ca. 1920s-1940s. Hebrew, with some Yiddish and English. The collection includes Beit Din documents and rulings, contracts, letters, certificates, announcements and more. Many deal with issues of marriage, divorce and release of agunot, as well as issues relating to attaining visas, emissaries, recommendations and other public issues. A large part of the collection includes letters from the Beit Din Chassidim in Jerusalem and the local Ashkenazic community council (on official stationery), with signatures of head of Beit Din R. Avraham Tzvi Schorr and members of his Beit Din: R. Aryeh Mordechai Rabinowitz (Rebbe of Porisov and Rabbi of Kurów, rabbi and posek in Jerusalem and later first Rabbi of Bnei Brak), R. Yehudah Leibush Landman, R. Shmuel Weingort, R. Meir David, R. Mordechai HaKohen (secretary and scribe of Beit Din), R. Shlomo Segal Klein, and the dayanim R. Shimon Ebershtork and R. Elazar Keller. The collection also includes: • Two lengthy letters addressed to R. Avraham Tzvi Schorr by R. Alter Shaul Feffer, rabbi of the Anshei Ungarn Beit Midrash in New York. • Letter of recommendation for Rebbe Yaakov Halberstam of Chakova on a fundraising mission to the United States. • Letter of R. Asher Sandormirsky, principal of the Or Zoreach yeshiva in Jaffa, on attaining visas for two students of the Or Yisrael yeshiva in Luninets. • Letter of recommendation signed by R. Chaim Elazar Alter (grandson of the Sefat Emet). • Announcement of R. Avraham Tzvi Schorr and his two nephews R. Meir Shapiro Rabbi of Lublin and R. Moshe Chaim Lau Rabbi of Prešov. • Letter of R. Avraham Tzvi Schorr to High Commissioner Sir Arthur Wauchope, requesting official recognition of independence of the Chassidic Beit Din for divorce issues. • Letters from the Mandatory government and the American consulate regarding immigration and various other official issues. R. Avraham Tzvi Schorr (1869-1945), son of R. Shmuel Yitzchak Schorr Rabbi of Monastyryshche, author of Minchat Shai, and a celebrated Galician rabbi. He succeeded his father as Rabbi of Monastyryshche from 1902-1908, whereupon he immigrated to Eretz Israel, residing in Jerusalem. He served as head of the Chassidic Beit Din in Jerusalem and as president of the Ashkenazic community council, and president and founder of Machazikei HaDat. He authored Shevivei Esh and Minchat Shai. He was a Chortkov Chassid, and his books received laudatory approbations from Rebbe Yisrael of Chortkov and his son R. Dov Ber, and the Ahavat Yisrael of Vizhnitz. He was an uncle of R. Meir Shapiro of Lublin. Approx. 70 paper items (including over 40 with signatures). Varying size and condition.
