Collection of Letters, Receipts and Documents – Sephardic Community of Jerusalem – Ca. 1890s-1950s - Large collection of paperwork – letters and documents, receipts and printed leaves, ephemera and envelopes – from the Sephardic community in Jerusalem. Ca. 1890s-1950s. The collection includes halachic rulings and certificates of unmarried status, letters, payment orders and more. The signatures on the present items include Jerusalem rabbis: Rishon LeTzion R. Yaakov Shaul Elyashar (signature stamp); R. Bentzion Cuenca; R. Bentzion Chazan; R. Yaakov Meir; R. Avraham Pilosof; R. Binyamin Alkotzer; R. Yosef Chai Panigel; R. Mordechai Meyuchas; R. Yosef Mordechai HaLevi; R. Avraham Azriel; R. Chananiah Gavriel; R. Yaakov Baruch; R. Amram Aburbia; and others. The collection includes many documents signed by leaders and members of the Bukharan community, including a notable 1898 document signed by owners of courtyards in the Bukharan neighborhood on the establishment of the Rechovot HaNahar yeshiva by R. Chaim Shaul Dweck HaKohen. They grant the ”society of Mechavnim” the right to use a synagogue next to their own for three years, and homes for the rabbis and kabbalists – R. Shaul Dweck HaKohen, R. Avraham Ades and R. Yom Tov HaLevi, apart from three other homes already allocated to R. Shaul Katzin, R. Shalom Alshich and R. Chaim Teimani. The collection also includes envelopes mailed to the Rishon LeTzion, Chief Rabbi Yaakov Shaul Elyashar. 63 paper items (including approx. 46 signed). Varying size and condition.
