Manuscript – Ledger of Emissary Rabbi Chaim Maman – Signatures of Rabbis and Important Individuals – Jerusalem and Communities of Greece, Yugoslavia and the Balkans – 1929-1930 - Manuscript, ledger of emissary R. Chaim Maman, on behalf of the Sephardic community of Jerusalem. [Jerusalem and Europe, 1929]. Large-format ledger, including letter of appointment of emissary R. Chaim Maman, signed by rabbis and distinguished individuals of the Sephardic community in Jerusalem, followed by many pages with lists of donors and income, and recommendations handwritten and signed by rabbis and leaders of communities he had visited. The letter of appointment names the locations to which he was sent: Turkey (Constantinople and Izmir and their environs), Greece, Athens, Salonika, Yugoslavia (including Belgrade), Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria (Sofia), Adrianople, Romania, Austria (Vienna and environs) and Hungary (Budapest and environs). The letter of appointment is signed and stamped by Rishon LeTzion R. Yaakov Meir, R. Nissim Elyashar – president of the Sephardic Vaad HaKlali, R. Yosef Elyashar – president of the Sephardic community, and R. Yosef Meyuchas. The ledger begins with mounted leaves (typewritten) with a German translation of the letter of appointment, with the same signatures. The leaves of the ledger include inscriptions of donors from various cities, some including their names and stamps, as well as certifications and inscriptions of community leaders and rabbis in various languages, with official signatures and stamps. The order of signatures and certifications effectively documents the emissary's journey. The ledger includes inscriptions, signatures and stamps from Greece (Volos, Janina, Corfu, Patras, Drama, Kavala, Didymoteicho, Veria); Yugoslavia and the Balkans (Belgrade – signed by Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Alkalai, Zemun, Slavonski Brod – includes letter handwritten and signed by R. Dr. Leib Weissberg, Sarajevo – includes letters handwritten by R. Dr. Moshe Moritz Levi and R. Dr. Mordechai Tzvi Auerbach – rabbis of the Sephardic and Ashkenazic communities, Bihać, Zenica, Tuzla, Bijeljina, Subotica, Dubrovnik – possibly the signature of the community's rabbi, Niš, Ada – including stamp of head of Beit Din R. Avraham David Segal Hoffman, Mostar). The last inscriptions in the ledger are the emissary's concluding reports of donations received, broken down by country and community. Approx. 35 written leaves (and many blank leaves). 32.5 cm. Fair condition. Stains, including dampstains and dark stains. Wear and tears. Original binding, very defective.
