Collection of Documents and Letters – Family of Rabbi Yaakov Posen, Dayan in Frankfurt – 1805-1939 - Collection of letters, manuscripts and documents of the family of R. Yaakov Posen of Frankfurt am Main (a dayan of the city contemporary with the Haflaah and his son the Machaneh Levi, son of R. Yekutiel Zalman Posen Rabbi of Friedberg). Frankfurt am Main and elsewhere, ca. 1805-1939. German and some Yiddish and Hebrew. The collection includes: • Receipts of rent payments. • Wedding certificate. • Oath of citizenship and declaration of wealth. • Family letter with blessings. • Eulogy for Rebbetzin Mina Posen (1827-1896, wife of R. Shlomo Shimon Yekutiel Posen, son of R. Yaakov Posen of Frankfurt), delivered by one of her sons-in-law (probably R. Natan Ehrenfeld, Rabbi of Prague). • English study notebook. • Letters relating to charitable contributions. • Letter addressed to R. Wilhelm (Binyamin) Posen relating to his publication of Or Zarua and other matters. • Official letter of thanks from the Frankfurt Jewish community for the inauguration of the Börneplatz synagogue, addressed to R. Wilhelm Posen and R. Refael Ettlinger (1852-1909). • Letter on postcard from R. Chanoch Ehrentrau Rabbi of Munich to philanthropist R. Wilhelm Posen in Frankfurt, regarding books. • Two leaves with a humoristic poem, probably for a wedding or Purim, apparently incomplete. • Eulogy (six handwritten pages) for Judit Güte Neuburger. • Three letters (typewritten) regarding rescuing the Torah library of R. Yaakov Posen and lending it to the Frankfurt Beit Midrash. • Letter of thanks to Henny Posen for her lecture and invitation to another. • Certificate as health specialist for Henny Posen. • Doctorate of Henny Posen granted by the University of Frankfurt. • And more. Yaakov Posen (1771-1859), dayan of Frankfurt am Main contemporary with the Haflaah and his son the Machaneh Levi, and rabbi of the Beit Midrash of the local Kloiz. R. Yaakov Posen and his descendants served as dayanim in Frankfurt for generations, from the 1800s to the Holocaust. Members of the Posen family serve to this day as rabbis and poskim in Eretz Israel, the United States and Europe. R. Wilhelm (Binyamin) Posen (1859-1923), grandson of R. Yaakov Posen, disciple of R. Shimshon Refael Hirsch and a pillar of the Frankfurt am Main Jewish community. Published and printed Parts III-IV of Or Zarua (Jerusalem, 1887-1890). A famous bibliophile, some letters in the present collection discuss purchase of books and assistance in publishing manuscripts. He printed several booklets with customs of the Frankfurt community and corresponded on halachic issues with leading authorities of the generation.
