J'Accuse by Émile Zola – Original Letter Published in L'Aurore, 1898 - J'Accuse ...! Lettre au Président de la République, by Émile Zola. In: L'Aurore, issue 87. Paris, 13 January 1898. French. Émile Zola's famous defense of Alfred Dreyfus – an open letter to the President of France, in which Zola accuses the generals, the Ministry of War and the court martial of miscarriage of justice. The letter's publication drew widespread attention in France. Zola was prosecuted for libel, sentenced to a year in prison and forced to flee to England. Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935) was a Jewish officer in the French army, falsely convicted of treason. The suspicions of falsification of documents and testimonies and a framed incrimination sparked an unprecedented public outrage in France, which later became known as the Dreyfus affair. Émile Zola's open letter, J'Accuse, is the signature text of the affair, and its title has become synonymous with protest against government injustice and corruption. 4 pages. 62.5 cm.
