Zelda – Handwritten ”Fragments of Childhood Moments” (Unpublished) – With Letter from Zelda to David Shimoni – 1951 - Booklet and letter handwritten by Zelda: • Booklet (6 leaves) handwritten by the poet Zelda, sent to the poet David Shimoni (Shimonovitch). Zelda headed the first page ”Fragments of Childhood Moments” (Ketaim Mitoch Pirkei Yaldut). The first poem begins: ”After crying / I went to visit my mother / and she told me, / My daughter, meager branch of my roots, / see what pain has done to me…”. This is followed by a poem corresponding to the Crippled Beggar poems printed in her first poetry collection, Penai . This poem concludes: ”The beggar erupted in / much, much laughter: / You will not see me / behind fate and fury, / not my soul itself / but the vestment. / And he whispered to me, / For both of our sakes let us know / that I, the broken one, trodden on by your feet, / am brother to a star in heaven. / Kiss my life”. This booklet was folded and sent in an envelope to David Shimoni. The postmark on the envelope is dated 29th Sivan, 3 July 1951. • Letter from Zelda to ”the dear poet of amazing kindness” David Shimoni. Postmark on envelope: 8th Cheshvan, 7 November 1951. Sent about half a year after Zelda sent the above booklet. Zelda inquires whether Shimoni had read it and asks for his feedback: ”Did you read my last message (Fragments of Childhood Moments), how do you judge them?” Zelda goes on to write of herself in her unique style: ”…Please do not think poorly of me. I think of you as a true friend, and speak with you without fear or embarrassment, as with the pure space that is now extending its charms above the heads of my neighbors in my residence, my neighbors who are strangers, such strangers. I think of you as a true friend to the point that a wild desire emerges to tell you how hard the teaching work is…”. She concludes with an apology: ”I shared my situation with you suddenly and unforeseeably, please very much forgive me for this”, signing, ”With deep thanks, Zelda”.
