Esther Scroll with Colorful Flower Illustrations – Italy, 18th/19th Century - Miniature decorated Esther scroll. [Italy, 18th or early 19th century]. Ink and paint on parchment; wood, turned and carved. Esther scroll on 7 parchment membranes sewn together, 46 text columns, 15 lines per column. The scroll is decorated throughout with vertical panels featuring colorful illustrations of leaf and flower arrangements, separating the text columns. Edges of tab at beginning of scroll cut decoratively, also incorporating a flower illustration. Rolled on a stylized wooden handle (original). Height of parchment: 8 cm. Height of handle: 22 cm. Fair-good condition. Creases, stains, wear and ink and paint stains. Much wear to beginning of first membrane, affecting ink and paint. Creases, stains and some punctures. Seams connecting first and second membranes resewn. Handle in good condition, with some fractures and pieces lacking.
