Bidspirit auction | Silver Kiddush Cup with Matching
Silver Kiddush Cup with Matching Top and Bottom – China, First Half of 20th Century - Kiddush cup with matching top and bottom. [China, first decades of 20th century]. Silver, cast, turned and engraved (unidentified marks on bottom – ”.U/.S.F” in a triangle, ”Sterling” and another heart-shaped stamp with Chinese letters, perhaps a maker's mark – apparently Chinese export marks; the cup is marked ”Silver”). Goblet with a short leg and circular base, with matching top lid and bottom with a vegetal pattern. Low dome at top of lid, decorated with leaves, with a pointed bud-shaped decoration. Matching bottom, circular and graduated, low with a circular base. Goblets of this type – with a lid – were in use in several Jewish communities in India, and were apparently brought to the Orient by Jews of Baghdad (like the Iraqi kiddush cups with lids). This goblet was almost certainly produced for one of the Baghdadi communities in the Far East, like other Judaica objects produced in China in the late 19th and early 20th century (Torah cases, Esther scroll cases and the like). Total height: 13.5 cm. Diameter of base: 9.7 cm. Weight: 170 g. Overall good condition. Light warping. Warping and minor fracture to base of goblet, with piece of silver missing.
