Bidspirit auction | Mid-20th Century Modernist Terracotta Male

Mid-20th Century Modernist Terracotta Male Bust - HEAVY!! An expressive, hand-modeled terracotta sculpture of a male bust, likely dating from the mid-to-late 20th century. This work is characterized by a highly tactile and gestural surface, featuring deep tool marks, cross-hatching, and an overall rough-hewn texture that emphasizes the artistic process. The piece is finished with a warm, reddish-brown earth-toned wash that settles into the recesses, enhancing its sculptural depth and highlighting the somber facial expression. It is self-basing, with the elongated neck flaring into a simplified, stylized shoulder line. The sculpture is hollow-formed, showing the internal hand-building marks. No visible signature, foundry marks, or edition numbers were identified. The sculpture remains in overall good condition. There are minor surface abrasions and small chips along the base edge and on some high-relief areas, such as the ears and hair, all consistent with the material and its expressive style. No evidence of structural cracks or previous restoration was observed.
