African Modernist Hand-Carved Ebony Wood Male Bust - This hand-carved modernist sculpture depicts a stylized male bust with a short beard and textured hair, fashioned from a single block of dense, dark-toned hardwood, likely ebony. The work features prominent, expressive tool facets across the facial features and neck, while the hair and beard are defined by a finely incised, cross-hatched pattern. The piece is self-based, with the neck tapering into an integral, roughly cylindrical plinth. No signatures, maker’s marks, or edition numbers were observed; the underside of the base shows a small piece of adhesive residue. The wood retains a dark, lustrous finish. Natural checking, characterized by fine radial cracks, is visible on the underside of the base, which is consistent with the age and drying of the hardwood.
