A Pair of Hand-Carved Hardwood Rhinoceros Bookends - A pair of hand-carved bookends featuring rhinoceroses appearing to pass through stylized books. The items are crafted from a dense, dark-stained hardwood. The figures exhibit hand-incised textures detailing the animals hide and the books spines. One piece bears a hand-painted inscription in gold-toned pigment on the underside edge that reads PETER 28-T-87. The construction features solid wood with a dark finish. 6 x 4 inches Overall good condition. One rhinoceros has a notable chip at the tip of an ear revealing the lighter natural wood beneath the dark finish. Minor surface wear and scuffing are present throughout, consistent with age and use.
