Papua New Guinea Sepik River Polychrome Carved Wood Spirit Mask with Cowrie Shells and Fiber Fringe - This hand-carved ceremonial spirit mask originates from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, specifically resembling the artistic styles of the Tambanum or Iatmul people. The mask is constructed from a single piece of wood and features an elongated facial form with a prominent, downward-curving nose. The surface is decorated with relief carving and painted in a traditional palette of earth pigments, including white, yellow-ochre, red-brown, and black, arranged in complex patterns of concentric waves and geometric bands. Small cowrie shells are utilized as decorative accents, representing the eyes and lining the lower borders of the face. A thick fringe of natural brown plant fibers is attached around the perimeter of the mask, secured with cordage through a series of drilled holes. The reverse side exhibits a dark, aged patina with visible wood grain and includes a small fiber loop at the top for suspension. No maker marks or alphanumeric inscriptions are present on the object. Length: 29 inches (74 cm) Width: 9.5 inches (24 cm). The mask is in fair to good condition, consistent with age and traditional use. There is a significant V-shaped wood loss and associated chipping at the bottom of the reverse side. The painted surface shows general wear, fading, and scattered pigment flaking, particularly on the raised carved elements. The natural fiber fringe is largely intact but shows signs of brittleness and minor losses. General surface grime and dust are present throughout the piece.
