African Carved Wood Helmet Mask with Animal Crest and Raffia Fringe - This African tribal helmet mask is hand-carved from wood and features a voluminous natural fiber raffia fringe. Stylistically, the piece is consistent with masks from the West or Central African regions, specifically resembling those attributed to the Sundi or Lega peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, often used in Bwami society ceremonies. The facial portion is ovoid with narrow slit eyes set within raised lids treated with orange-ochre pigment. The mask includes a small nose and an open oval mouth. The upper helmet section is decorated with incised geometric cross-hatched patterns and retains traces of reddish-brown pigment. A carved animal figure, possibly representing an antelope or goat, serves as a crest at the apex. The interior of the helmet displays visible tool marks and a darkened patina. Height: 16 inches Width: 10 inches The mask is in fair to good condition. There are various smaller checks and cracks throughout the wood, particularly on the animal crest and ears. Significant loss and fading of polychrome pigments are present, notably the white kaolin-style pigment.
