Bidspirit auction | A Pair of Hand-Carved Lozi

A Pair of Hand-Carved Lozi Style Wooden Sungod Figures with Raffia Headdresses - This pair of hand-carved wooden anthropomorphic figures features natural plant fiber accents and integrated bases. Each figure is carved from a single piece of wood. The heads are topped with semi-circular wooden backboards to which fanned raffia headdresses are stitched. The bodies are wrapped in hand-knotted or crocheted fiber garments. The wood features decorative blackened areas on the faces and geometric patterns on the backboards, likely achieved through scorching or staining. Adhered to the reverse of each figure is a tan paper label with typed black ink. One label is inscribed LOZI SUNGOD This is used to celebrate plentiful crops. The other label is inscribed SUNGOD A great common spirit worshipped by most tribes. These figures are consistent with ethnographic items produced for the mid-to-late 20th-century export or specialty shop trade. Figure A height: 15.5 inches Figure B height: 16 inches Base width: 3 inches The figures are in good vintage condition. The wood exhibits light handling wear, minor surface abrasions, and natural drying cracks or checks, primarily visible on the bases and reverse sides. The raffia headdresses and woven fiber garments are largely intact, showing minor fraying and light dust accumulation consistent with age and display.
