Mid-20th Century Carved Maori Wood Koruru Mask - This hand-carved wooden mask, traditionally known as a koruru or parata, originates from the Maori people of New Zealand. The object is carved from a single block of wood and finished with a dark brown stain. The face features deep relief carving and intricate incised patterns, including characteristic curvilinear koru spiral motifs and stylized facial features. The reverse is deeply hollowed out and shows clear, rough-hewn chisel and adze marks from the carving process.
