Himalayan Style Bone and White Metal Kohl Bottle with Applicator - This kohl bottle, also known as a surma dani, or snuff bottle, is constructed with a tapered, curved body of carved bone. The object features silver-toned metal mountings, likely a white metal alloy or Tibetan silver. The front metal panel is decorated with two repoussé floral motifs and rows of S-shaped filigree wirework. The neck is finished with a band of multi-strand twisted wire. The bottle includes a scalloped, domed metal lid topped with a green cabochon, which is attached to the neck by a metal chain. A metal sleeve on the side holds a long, thin bone applicator tool featuring a decorative turned finial. The piece is accented with red and green cabochons, characteristic of the coral and turquoise stones used in traditional Himalayan craftsmanship from Tibet or Nepal. The base consists of a flat, plain metal plate. No maker marks, hallmarks, or signatures are present on the item. Height: 5.5 inches. Good condition with wear consistent with age and use. One red cabochon inlay is missing from the upper floral motif on the front panel. Minor oxidation and tarnishing are present on the metal surfaces. A large rectangular patch of yellowish adhesive residue is visible on the underside of the base. The bone components show natural color variations and minor surface wear.
