P. Wiederer and Bro. Gem Bamboo Triplicate Folding Mirror Patented 1889 - A late 19th-century three-panel folding mirror manufactured by P. Wiederer and Bro. of New York. This model, identified as the Gem Bamboo Triplicate, features a hardwood frame turned and stained to simulate bamboo in the Aesthetic Movement style. The exterior panels are decorated with foil-stamped or metal plates displaying a collage of Japanese-inspired motifs, including a Kirin, various calligraphic characters in cartouches, and floral patterns against a dark, textured ground with gold and silver-toned highlights. The interior contains three beveled mirror plates. The central frame is supported by two hinged side panels equipped with small brass fold-down feet and a brass latch for closure. A brass plaque is affixed to the upper reverse of the central panel with the following inscription: P. WIEDERER and BRO. GEM BAMBOO TRIPLICATE PATENTED APRIL 9 1889. 11 inches H x 10.5 inches W (closed). The mirror plates show minor foxing and silvering loss consistent with age, primarily located along the lower edges. The faux bamboo frame remains structurally sound with localized rubbing, minor dings, and a small surface loss on the upper rail. Exterior decorative panels exhibit age-related oxidation and surface wear. All original brass hardware, including hinges and latch, is present and functional. Appears to be missing two finials.
