A Pair of Hand Carved Wood African Zoomorphic Masks - This pair of hand-carved wooden masks consists of two zoomorphic representations, one of a giraffe and one of a zebra. These items are characteristic of contemporary African decorative craft produced for the export market in the late 20th century. The giraffe mask is constructed from wood with a glossy polychrome stain and features relief-carved honeycomb-shaped spots in a honey-brown tone. It is detailed with three ossicones at the crown, two elongated ears, and pierced eyes. The zebra mask features a satin finish with black stained or charred geometric lines creating a stylized stripe pattern. It includes a blackened muzzle, horizontally extended ears, and pierced eyes. The reverse of each mask is hollowed out and features an integral carved wooden ring for hanging; the giraffe mask retains a white cord while the zebra mask has a tied canvas-style strap. No maker marks, stamps, or signatures are visible on either piece. The style and construction resemble decorative items distributed by fair trade organizations such as Jedando Handicrafts or Global Crafts. There are light surface scuffs and minor abrasions, particularly on the muzzle and ossicones of the giraffe and the ears of the zebra.
