Marka Zoomorphic Wood and Brass Overlay Mask, Mali - This zoomorphic mask is attributed to the Marka (Warka) people of the Niger River region in Mali. The mask is constructed from a hand-hewn wood core entirely overlaid with hammered sheets of yellow and reddish-toned metal, including brass and copper alloys. These sheets are secured to the wood base with numerous small metal tacks. The metal surfaces feature decorative stippled or pointille patterns and repousse linear borders. The form is characterized by an elongated, tapered snout, a prominent forehead, and two tapering horns projecting from the crown. It includes two narrow, rectangular eye slits and a stylized protruding mouth at the tip of the snout. The interior of the mask shows visible tool marks and a darkened patina. A small rectangular paper label is affixed to the interior with the handwritten cursive text made in mali. A contemporary wire has been attached to the interior for mounting. 19 inches x 7 inches The mask is in good vintage condition with signs of age and handled use. The exterior metal overlays exhibit a varied surface patina with areas of oxidation, tarnish, and small spots of verdigris. There is light lifting of the metal sheets at the edges and minor splitting to the wood on the horns. The wood interior shows a naturally darkened patina.
