CARTE-DE-VISITE PHOTOGRAPH of Rose Eytinge, seated view.
Photographer: Fredricks, New York. Photograph dated in pencil “April ’64.”
Born in Philadelphia, noted actress Rose Eytinge (1835-1911) was known as the “Black Eyed Jewess.” She performed with Edwin Booth’s company and was the first actor to receive a three figure salary. President Lincoln attended a number of her performances and invited her to the White House. Reportedly her flirted with her to the great disapproval of Mary Lincoln. Eytinge lived in Egypt for two years.
