Sabbionetta, Corneilio Adelkind for Tobias Foa, 1554.

The Spanish-born author (1466–1542) served as rabbi in Egypt and later settled in Jerusalem. His expert Halachic opinions were held in high esteem throughout the Levant.

This classical work of responsa includes unusual socio-historical concerns, e.g (case no. 1): Whether a young woman who converted during the Inquisition is later permitted to wed a Kohen as she is deemed to have experienced improper sexual relations.

Appended are a number of scarce liturgical and penitential poems. The final prayer (p. 198b) refers to the Author’s expulsion from Spain and his travails in North Africa when he was saved from the “depths of the sea” and rescued from the “prisoners pit” whilst in captivity.
